Home Networking Wireless
  • Article ID: 143200

In order to successfully set up your Cable or DSL connection for Wireless Home Networking, you must have the EarthLink Home Networking service on your account. You can order this service through MyAccount.

NOTE: You will experience temporary Internet disruption within this setup. We suggest that you print these instructions before continuing.

Setting Up Your Wireless Home Network

Set your DSL modem to bridge mode. Visit the Configuring Your DSL Modem for a Home Network page for further instructions on how to do this. If you are using a Cable modem, you can skip to Step 2.

NOTE: Only your DSL modem and computer should be connected for this part.

Turn off the modem and router if they are both on. Use an Ethernet cord to connect the modem to the router's Internet, LAN, or WLAN port. Then, use another Ethernet cord to connect the router to your computer. If your router has multiple Ethernet ports (i.e. Ports 1-4), plug the Ethernet cord into the first port (Port 1).

Turn on the modem. Wait between 10-15 seconds, then turn on the router.

Once an Internet connection has been established on your computer, configure your wireless router. If you are unable to connect to the Internet, see Article 35817 to troubleshoot your devices. Otherwise, please select the type of router you have below:

Linksys E1000/E1200 for DSL & Cable

Linksys WRT54G for DSL

Linksys WRT54G for Cable

Linksys WRTP54G for DSL

Linksys WRTP54G for Cable

NOTE: We currently only have instructions for the above routers. The configuration may be the same if the brand of your router is similar to any of the aforementioned routers.

Set up your wireless adapters for the computers that have no built in wireless network utility. Select the type of adapter you have below:

Linksys WPC54G Adapter

Linksys WUSB54G Adapter

NOTE: We currently only have instructions for the above routers. The configuration may be the same if the brand of your router is similar to any of the aforementioned routers.

Connect the other device(s) to your network. Use the device's WiFi or wireless network setup utility to browse for available wireless networks. When you see the network that you previously set up (Step 4), select it and enter the password that was created during that setup process.

Connect your printer and/or other peripherals. Select the device to start the setup process:

NOTE: Items such as network scanners, fax machines, copiers, etc. may have a similar setup process to that of a printer; however, if you are unable to connect your peripheral to your network, contact your peripheral's manufacturer for help.
